SASANIAN KINGS. Bahram I, 273-276. Drachm (Silver, 25 mm, 3.24 g, 9 h), style A/a, ‘Ktesiphon’ mint. Draped bust of Bahram I to right, wearing a radiate crown with a great korymbos on top; two ribbons rising from behind head; the symbol of ‘frawahr’, the guardian spirit of kingship and the emblem of the royal treasury, above the ribbons; along the dotted rim running anticlockwise from 11 h to 1 h, portions lost where the edge is broken away, ‘mzdysn bgy wrhrʾn MRKAn MRKA ʾyrʾn W ʾnyrʾn MNW ctry MN yzdʾn’ = ‘mazdēsn bay Wahrām šāhān šāh Ērān ud Anērān kē čihr az yazadān’ (‘The Mazda-worshipping Lord, Bahram, King of Kings of the Iranians and Non-Iranians, whose essence is from the gods’ in Pahlavi). Rev. Fire altar flanked by two attendants, wearing different crowns, the left with a korymbos crown and the right with a mural crown; to right and left, ‘NWRA ZY ˗ wrhrʾn’ = ‘ādur Wahrām’ (‘Fire of Bahram’ in Pahlavi). Göbl, type I/1. SNS II, type I(2)/1aa(1a). Harshly cleaned and scratched, and with the edges partially broken away, otherwise, very fine.
