Such pronounced double striking is rare on Severan denarii. Interestingly, the Caesar’s portrait from the first strike has made the beaded border of the second, better-centered strike especially prominent above the head, while the legend behind the head has almost entirely disappeared. The coin thus takes on an unusually medallic appearance
