Caracalla, 198-217. 'Antoninianus' (Bronze, 22 mm, 4.43 g, 12 h), a contemporary cast imitation ('limes falsum'). Irregular mint, imitating Rome, after 215. ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM Radiate and cuirassed bust of Caracalla to right, seen from behind. Rev. P M TR P XVIII COS IIII P P Serapis standing front, head to left, raising his right hand in salute and holding long scepter in his left. Cf. BMC 128, Cohen 295 and RIC 263d (for prototype). Very rare. Minor traces of corrosion, otherwise, very fine.
Most contemporary cast imitations ('Limes falsa') reproduce denarii, sestertii, dupondii, or asses. Cast antoniniani, by contrast, are only rarely encountered. For another example, likewise copying a prototype of 215, see Agora Spartan Sale 75 (2017), 188.
