Important for reconstructing the relative chronology
Lot 564
PAPHLAGONIA. Sinope. Mid 5th century BC. Drachm (Silver, 18 mm, 6.00 g). Head of a sea-eagle to left; below, dolphin left. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square with two opposing quarters filled, the others plain and with pellet. HGC 7, 386 var. (sunken quarters stippled). SNG Ashmolean 260. SNG BM Black Sea 1364 var. (sunken quarters stippled). SNG von Aulock -. Nicely centered on a broad flan. Traces of overstriking and with very light deposits, otherwise, good very fine.

This type was apparently overstruck on an earlier Sinope drachm with a larger eagle’s head, making it important for reconstructing the relative chronology of these stylistically diverse issues.
