Lot 5035
IRAN, Qajars. Fath 'Ali Shah, as Shah, AH 1212-1250 / AD 1797-1834. Riyal (Silver, 24 mm, 10.42 g, 12 h), type A, Shiraz, AH 1214 = AD 1799/1800. al-sulṭān Fatḥ ‘Alī Shāh Qājār (‘The sultan Fath ‘Ali Shah Qajar’ in Persian). Dated 1214 at the bottom. Rev. Within cartouche; above: ‘al-‘izzat-u li-llāh’ (‘Glory belongs to God’ in Arabic), ḍarb-i dār al-‘ilm-i Shīrāz (‘Struck at the abode of knowledge, Shiraz’ in Persian). Album 2874. Very rare. Minor marks and deposits, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Joseph Markowitz Collection (1897-1981), brought to Israel in 1949 and kept in the family ever since.

While early silver riyals of Fath ‘Alī Shāh are common as a general type, the Shīrāz mint combined with the early date AH 1214 is rarely encountered.
