Umayyad Caliphate. temp. 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. Pashiz (Bronze, 19 mm, 0.44 g, 9 h), Arab-Sasanian type, citing governor al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf (AH 75-95 / AD 694-713). Draped bust resembling Khosrau II to right, wearing an elaborate mural crown; behind head, ‘GDE / ʾp̄zwt’ (‘[may his] glory increase’ in Pahlavi); before head, ‘al-Ḥajjāj ibn / Yūsuf’ (‘al-Hajjaj son of Yusuf’ in Arabic); in the outer margin, ‘bism / Allāh / [lā i/lāha i/llā A]/llāh / wa/ḥdahū / Muḥammad / rasū/l A/llāh’ (‘In the name of Allah. There is no deity but Allah, the One. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’ in Arabic). Rev. Orans figure standing to right, with the hand overemphasized; to left and right, ‘pylwc' / YHWWNʾt – hcʾc’ = ‘pērōz bawād Hajāj’ (‘May al-Hajjaj be victorious’ in Pahlavi). Album B37. Gyselen 79.
