An unpublished eastern CASTOR Denarius of Geta
Lot 392
Geta, as Caesar, 198-209. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.63 g, 2 h), Laodicea ad Mare (?), 202. P SEPT GETA CAES PONT Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Geta to right, seen from behind. Rev. CASTOR Castor standing front beside horse, head to left, holding bridle in his right hand and long scepter in his left. BMC -. Cohen 12. RIC -. Apparently unique and unpublished save for its previous FPL appearance. Lightly toned and very well struck, a beautiful coin. Minor edge crack, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. August Rohdewald (1929-2026), ex Schweizerische Kreditanstalt Monetarium FPL 39, spring 1983, 127 (with original ticket).

The portrait style and drapery of this beautiful CASTOR denarius of Geta Caesar clearly mark it as an eastern issue. The type, however, has hitherto been known only from Rome, so this piece appears to be unique. Except for its appearance in the 1983 fixed-price list of the Swiss Bank Corporation, where it was wrongly described, it is unpublished.
