This coin reflects the political rivalry between the Mughal brothers Kamrān Mīrzā and Humāyūn. The countermark, asserting Kamrān’s justice and authority, was applied to circulating Shahrukhīs of his rival, effectively re-validating them for use in regions under his control. Only a small fraction of such countermarked Shahrukhīs survive, and specimens with legible countermarks are particularly rare.
