Host coin: Central field, within a circular frame: lā ilāha illā Allāh Muḥammad rasūl Allāh (‘There is no god but God. Muḥammad is the Messenger of God’ in Arabic). Margin: Names of the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs (‘Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān and ʿAlī, may God be pleased with them’ in Arabic). Rev. Rectangular countermark: ʿadl-i Kamrān bādshāh ghāzī (‘The justice of Kamrān, the victorious king’ in Persian). Host coin: Central field, within a miḥrāb-shaped cartouche: Muḥammad Humāyūn Ghāzī (‘Muḥammad Humāyūn Ghāzī’ in Persian). Album J2464.2. Very rare. This coin reflects the political rivalry between the Mughal brothers Kamrān Mīrzā and Humāyūn. The countermark, asserting Kamrān’s justice and authority, was applied to circulating Shahrukhīs of his rival, effectively re-validating them for use in regions under his control. Only a small fraction of such countermarked Shahrukhīs survive, and specimens with legible countermarks are particularly rare.
