Lot 700
SELEUKID KINGS. Demetrios I Soter, 162-150 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29 mm, 16.78 g, 12 h), uncertain mint 82, probably in Cilicia, circa 162-155/4. Diademed head of Demetrios I to right within laurel wreath. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ - ΔHMHTPIOY Tyche, holding scepter in her right hand and cornucopiae in her left, seated left on throne supported by tritoness right; to left, monogram of AYT. HGC 9, 795e. SC 1620.2. Very rare. Lightly toned. Flan crack and edge chip on upper reverse, otherwise, nearly very fine.

Ex Classical Numismatic Group E-Auction 264, 21 September 2011, 138.

The portrait on the very rare tetradrachms of this issue is characterized by a highly unusual depiction of Demetrios' hair, as it forgoes the otherwise obligatory anastolé in the tradition of imitatio Alexandri and instead falls evenly onto the forehead like bangs.
