SELEUKID KINGS. Demetrios I Soter, 162-150 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29 mm, 16.78 g, 12 h), uncertain mint 82, probably in Cilicia, circa 162-155/4. Diademed head of Demetrios I to right within laurel wreath. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ - ΔHMHTPIOY Tyche, holding scepter in her right hand and cornucopiae in her left, seated left on throne supported by tritoness right; to left, monogram of ΠAΥ. SC 1620.2. SMA 91. Very rare. Lightly toned and with a beautiful and unusual portrait. Nearly extremely fine.

From the Basileiai Hellēnikai Collection of Exceptional Tetradrachms, Leu 17, 31 May 2025, 312, privately acquired from Apollo Numismatics on 20 August 2022, and previously privately acquired from Dr. H. Lanz at the ANS convention in Los Angeles on 11 August 2014.

The portrait on the very rare tetradrachms of this issue is characterized by a highly unusual depiction of Demetrios' hair, as it forgoes the otherwise obligatory anastolé in the tradition of imitatio Alexandri and instead falls evenly onto the forehead like bangs.
