A silver-plated subaerate of an aureus
Lot 2354
Augustus, 27 BC-AD 14. Denarius (Subaeratus, 17 mm, 3.45 g, 12 h), a contemporary plated imitation of an aureus issue from an uncertain mint in Asia Minor, irregular mint, after 27 BC. [CA]ESAR Bare head of Augustus to right. Rev. AVGVSTVS Heifer advancing left. Cf. BMC 659, Calicó 168, CBN 1010 and RIC 538 (for aureus as prototype). A highly unusal piece. Light marks and with some breaks in plating on the reverse, otherwise, nearly very fine.

This fascinating subaerate piece imitates an aureus rather than a denarius.
