LUCANIA. Velia. Circa 440/35-400 BC. Didrachm or Nomos (Silver, 20 mm, 7.62 g, 5 h). Head of Athena to left, wearing crested Attic helmet adorned, on the bowl, with Skylla raising her right hand as if to shade her eyes as she looks off in the distance. Rev. YEΛHTΕΩ[N] Lion attacking stag to left; in field to right, [Δ]. HN Italy 1270. SNG Ashmolean 1115 (same dies). Williams 137 (O94/R105). Rare and with attractive iridescent toning. Struck on a slightly short flan and with minor roughness on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.

This very unusual obverse die with a Skylla on Athena's helmet is clearly reminiscent of issues of Thourioi.
