Lot 1991
Tetricus I, Romano-Gallic Emperor, 271-274. Antoninianus (Bronze, 16 mm, 1.41 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Treveri, irregular mint, after 274. IIIII C TITIIIIVS IIIIC Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Tetricus I to right. Rev. SAL[VS] AVGG (retrograde) Salus standing front, head to left, feeding serpent, rising from altar, out of patera with her right hand and holding rudder in her left. Cf. AGK (corr.) 10a, Cunetio 2617, Elmer 779 and RIC V.4 822 (for prototype). Slightly porous and with a minor flan crack, otherwise, about extremely fine.

This imitative portrait of Tetricus has something almost horrific about it, as if the bust were partially melted.
