A split after strike planchet error occurs when a planchet partially or completely separates into two layers after the coin has been struck, splitting along a pre-existing weakness in the metal.

The underlying defect usually originates during planchet production. Impurities, trapped gas, oxidation, or poor bonding within the metal can create an internal weakness. The tremendous pressure of striking puts additional stress on this flaw: the planchet is struck while still intact but subsequently separates along the weakened plane immediately after striking.

A characteristic feature of a split after strike error is that the original outer surface retains the normal struck design, while the newly exposed interior typically has a rough, irregular, and unstruck appearance.
