A very rare issue from Arran in the eastern Caucasus

'Abbasid Caliphate. temp. Al-Mansur, AH 136-158 / AD 754-775. Fals (Bronze, 24 mm, 2.90 g, 3 h), citing the heir apparent as 'al-Mahdi Muhammad ibn Amir al-Mu'minin' and the governor Bakkar, Arran, AH 153 = AD 769/70. Central field, in three lines: lā ilāha illā / Allāh waḥdahū / lā sharīka lahū (‘There is no deity but God alone; He has no associate’ in Arabic). Margin: bi-sm Allāh ḍuriba [hādhā al-fals] bi-Arrān [sanat thalāth] wa-khamsīn wa-miʾa (‘In the name of God, this fals was struck in Arran in the year one hundred and fifty-three’ in Arabic). Outer margin, above: [Bakkār]. Rev. Central field, in three lines: mimmā amara bihī / al-Mahdī Muḥammad / ibn amīr al-muʾminīn (‘From what was ordered by al-Mahdī Muḥammad, son of the Commander of the Faithful’ in Arabic). Margin: [Muḥammad rasūl Allāh arsalahū bi-l-hudā wa-dīn al-ḥaqq li-yuẓhirahū ʿalā al-dīn kullihī wa-law kariha al-mushrikūn] (‘Muhammad is the Messenger of God, whom He sent with guidance and the religion of truth to make it prevail over all religion, even though the polytheists may dislike it’ in Arabic).
