Lot 432
KYRENAICA. Kyrene. Magas, as Ptolemaic Governor, circa 308-305 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 18 mm, 0.29 g, 9 h). Female head facing slightly to right (?). Rev. Elephant walking right. BMC -. Boston MFA -. Buttrey -. Cf. Leu Web Auction 42 (2026), 1030, Leu Web Auction 7 (2019), 588 and Obolos 39 (2025), 462. SNG Copenhagen -. Extremely rare. Struck from a very worn obverse die and with numerous scratches, otherwise, good fine.
Style and fabric of this enigmatic issue are vaguely reminiscent of a hemiobol in Paris, formerly in the Seyrig Collection and later attributed by Houghton and Lorbeer to an uncertain Seleukid mint (HGC 9, 457 = SC 1293), but the style and fabric of our piece are clearly different and much more in line with the coinage of the Greek cities in the Kyrenaika
