Ahighly unusual rendering of the star
Lot 1758
Julia Paula, Augusta, 219-220. Denarius (Silver, 15 mm, 3.05 g, 6 h), Rome, 220. IVLIA PAVLA AVG Draped bust of Julia Paula to right. Rev. CONCORDIA Concordia seated left, holding patera in her right hand and leaning with her left elbow on throne; in field to left, star. BMC 172. Cohen 6. RIC 211. With a highly unusual rendering of the star. Struck on a slightly short flan and with faint marks, otherwise, very fine.
Although the rendering of the stars on Julia Paula’s coins varies from time to time, the rays normally taper toward their outer ends. On our die, however, the star is rendered in a highly unusual manner: the engraver not only omitted the central dot, but also fashioned the rays as wedges tapering inward toward the center
