JUDAEA, Bar Kokhba War. 132-136 CE. Zuz = Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.27 g, 7 h), regular coinage. Uncertain mint. Undated, but attributed to Year 3 = 134/5 CE. 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤍 (‘Šimʿon’ in Paleo-Hebrew) Grape bunch on vine with small leaf to right. Rev. 𐤋𐤇𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 ('For the Freedom of Jerusalem' in Paleo-Hebrew) One-handled jug with fluted body to right. Bromberg I 195 (same dies). Hendin 6461 (same dies). Meshorer, AJC, 69 (same dies). Mildenberg 164 (O21/R89). Samel -. Shoshana I 20465 (same dies). Sofaer 122 (same dies). Beautifully toned and with a clear overstrike on a denarius of Vespasian. Traces of overstriking and the reverse slightly off center, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

This zuz was struck over a denarius of Vespasian. The legend [...]ES VES[...], presumably part of IMP CAES VESP AVG P M, can be clearly made out on the obverse between 3 and 8 o’clock.
