JUDAEA, Bar Kokhba War. 132-136 CE. Zuz = Denarius (Silver, 20 mm, 3.22 g, 6 h), regular coinage. Uncertain mint, Year 2 = 133/4 CE. 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤍 (‘Šimʿon’ in Paleo-Hebrew) Grape bunch on vine with small leaf to left. Rev. 𐤔 𐤁 𐤋𐤇𐤓 𐤉𐤔𐤀𐤋 ('Year 2 of the Freedom of Israel' in Paleo-Hebrew) One-handled jug with fluted body to right; to right, palm frond. Bromberg I 145 (same dies). Hendin 6424 (same dies). Meshorer, AJC, 36a. Mildenberg 45.2 (this coin, O8/R22'). Samel 2419 (same dies). Shoshana I 20310 (same dies). Sofaer 58. Beautifully toned, well struck on a full flan, and with a fine pedigree. Overstruck on a denarius of Domitian. Minor edge fault and with traces of overstriking, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

On the obverse, the inscription [...] CAES DOMITIA[...] clearly reveals an overstruck denarius of Domitian. The outward-facing legend and the sequence CAES DOMITIAN point to a denarius dating from 81 CE.
