Judaica JUDAEA, Herodians. Herod I (the Great), 40-4 BCE. 8 Prutot (Bronze, 23 mm, 10.50 g, 12 h), uncertain mint in Samaria (Sebaste?), RY 3 = 38/7 BCE. Facing ornate helmet surmounted by star and flanked by two palm fronds; bowl decorated with two akanthos leaves. Rev. HPΩΔOY BAΣΙΛΕΩΣ around tripod supporting lebes (ceremonial bowl); to left, LΓ (date), to right, monogram. A&F Type 1 (O2/R17). Bromberg I 20-21. Hendin 6204. Meshorer, AJC, 1. RPC I 4901. Samel 2071-2073. Shoshana I 20095. Sofaer 1-7. Struck on an exceptionally thick and heavy flan. Minor pitting, otherwise, very fine.
