This coin is a so-called flip-over double strike, meaning that the flan was not removed between two strikes but flipped over. While this phenomenon is well known among the thin Roman coins of the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, it is much rarer in early, thicker coinages, such as this Lycian third-stater of the 5th century BC.
