Gallienus, 253-268. Antoninianus (Silver, 20 mm, 3.29 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation, irregular mint, after 256. GALLIENVS•P•F•AVG Radiate and cuirassed bust of Gallienus to right. Rev. PROVIDENTIA AVGG Providentia standing front, head to left, holding wand over globe in her right hand and cornucopiae in her left. A wonderful piece of incredibly charming imitative style. Nearly extremely fine.

From the Rhenus Collection of Antoniniani, covering the period from the reign of Caracalla to that of Postumus.


This very unusual imitation combines an avers type from the mint of Cologne with a reverse from an early emission of the Rome mint (cf. RIC 159).
