Overstruck on a denarius of Elagabalus
Lot 3104
Diva Mariniana, died before 253. Antoninianus (Silver, 22 mm, 2.78 g, 12 h), Viminacium, circa 253-254. DIVAE MARINIANAE Veiled and draped bust of Diva Mariniana set on crescent to right. Rev. CONSECRATIO Diva Mariniana, raising her right hand and holding scepter in her left, reclining left on peacock flying upward to right. Cohen 14. MIR 850b. RIC 6. Traces of overstriking and the obverse struck from a somewhat worn die, otherwise, very fine.

From the Rhenus Collection of Antoniniani, covering the period from the reign of Caracalla to that of Postumus.

When this antoninianus of Diva Mariniana is rotated 180 degrees, faint traces of a laureate imperial portrait facing right become visible within her portrait, together with the legend [...]ONINV[...]. The piece was therefore overstruck on a denarius of Elagabalus bearing the legend IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, although the reverse type can unfortunately no longer be identified. For another antoninianus overstruck on an earlier denarius, see lot 3075 above.
