An exceptional 1/4 stater of Alexander with a completely retrograde legend
Lot 220
KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. 1/4 Stater (Gold, 11 mm, 2.16 g, 9 h), Amphipolis, struck under Antipater, circa 325-319. Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet decorated with a coiled serpent. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝ\ΔΡΟΥ Thunderbolt above bow and club. Price -, cf. 165 (legend not retrograde). Well struck and clear. An exceptional piece with a completely retrograde legend. Minor scrapes and scratches, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

The legend on this piece is entirely retrograde. Apparently, the die engraver forgot that the letters had to be cut in reverse on the die if they were to appear correctly on the coin, with the result that the legend on our piece is reversed in error.
