Lot 1771
Mark Antony, 44-30 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.54 g, 6 h), military mint moving with Mark Antony (Patrae?), 32-31. ANT••AVG - III•VIR•R•P•C Galley right, with scepter tied with fillet on prow. Rev. LEG XVII Aquila between two signa. Babelon (Antonia) 127. Crawford 544/32. CRI 374. RBW 1846. Sydenham 1237. Harshly cleaned, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Michael Landt Collection.

Antony's Legio XVII did not survive the aftermath of the Battle of Actium. Coins recording its cognomen 'Classica' indicate that it was a unit attached to the fleet, perhaps like present-day 'marines'.
