An unpublished and unique symbol at Caesaraea Maritima
Lot 1505
JUDAEA. Caesaraea Maritima. Caracalla, 198-217. Tetradrachm (Billon, 26 mm, 13.31 g, 12 h), 215-217. AYT KAI ANTΩNINOC CЄB Laureate head of Caracalla to right. Rev. ΔHMAPX ЄΞ YΠATOC TO Δ Eagle with spread wings standing facing on serpent-entwined torch, head to left and holding wreath in beak; between the eagle's legs, head of a lion to left. Prieur -. RPC V.3 online -, cf. ID 87174 (bull's head to right). Apparently unpublished and unique. The obverse slightly weak, otherwise, very fine.

Several control marks below the eagle are known from Caesarea Maritima. The bull’s head is the most common, but a serpent’s head (RPC V.3 online ID 87181) and a branch (RPC V.3 online ID 87182) are also attested. The left-facing lion’s head on the our coin therefore adds a further symbol to the corpus of coinage from this famous Judaean port city.
