The Rosary confraternities (Confraternitates Rosarii), originally fostered by the Dominican Order, spread widely across Central Europe between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. These lay associations within the Catholic Church were devoted to the communal recitation of the rosary, participation in Masses, processions, and pilgrimages, and the attainment of indulgences.

In the region historically known as Upper Hungary (Felvidék), a religiously and ethnically diverse area inhabited by Slovaks, Hungarians, and Germans, such confraternities assumed particular importance during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They served not only as vehicles of Marian devotion but also as cohesive social institutions, reinforcing local Catholic identity, organizing communal religious life, and often operating in a multilingual environment.
