Lot 5014
GERMANY. Bundesrepublik Deutschland. 1949-present. Pattern 10 Pfennig 1995 A (Bimetallic, 22 mm, 5.20 g, 12 h), bi-metallic Pattern, Berlin. BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND / •1995• Oak sprig. Rev. A / 10 / PFENNIG within two rye ears. Cf. Jaeger 383 (for prototype). Exceedingly rare, the third known example. Tiny marks, otherwise, good extremely fine.

From a German Collection of Patterns and Mint Errors.

This 1995 bi-metallic 10 Pfennig pattern of the Federal Republic of Germany is an exceptionally rare experimental issue. Unlike the regular 10 Pfennig coins, which were struck in brass-plated steel and weighed 4 grams, this pattern was conceived as a bi-metallic piece featuring a copper-nickel center within a copper ring.

Patterns of this kind were struck solely for experimental purposes, likely to evaluate alternative materials during the final years of the Deutsche Mark and in preparation for the introduction of bi-metallic Euro coinage.
