In 1795 and 1796, the Prince-Abbey of Fulda came under severe financial pressure from the French Revolutionary Wars and the heavy contribution payments demanded in connection with the advancing French armies.

In response, Prince-Abbot Adalbert von Harstall ordered portions of the court silver to be melted down and coined into convention specie, including the distinctive 1796 1/2 Konventionstalers.
