An interesting issue
Lot 4382
FRANCE, Royal. Philippe V le Long (the Tall), 1316–1322. Gros tournois à l'O rond (Silver, 25 mm, 3.18 g, 11 h), March 1318. ✠ BNDICTV:SIT:NOME:DNI:nRI:DEI:IҺV XPI // ✠ PhILIPPVS REX Cross pattée in two legend rings. Rev. ✠ TVRONVS(hammer)CIVIS Castle within border of twelve fleur-de-lis. Duplessy 238. Gamberini, Imitationi 344. A nicely toned and well struck example of this interesting issue. Small scratches on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.

The small hammer placed between 'TVRONVS' and 'CIVIS' once led scholars to identify this piece as an imitation of the coinage struck by the German Burgraviate of Hammerstein on the Rhine. More recent research, however, has persuasively attributed the type to the issues of Philippe V of France. The hammer is now generally understood to depict a minting hammer rather than a canting emblem alluding to Hammerstein.
