Persian anonymous copper. Safi I (Sam Mirza) temp. AH 1038-1052 / AD 1629-1642. Falus (Copper, 20 mm, 6.17 g, 1 h), Tabriz, AH 1042 = AD 1632/3 (?). Peacock standing to right with a prominent stylized crest. Rev. fulūs-i [zarb-i] Tabrīz (‘Copper coin struck in Tabriz’ in Persian). Date partly visible, possibly 1042. ‘Alā’ al-Dīnī, p. 190. Valentine -. cf. Zeno #333920 (different crest). Extremely rare. The usual areas of weakness, small deposits and tiny marks, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Joseph Markowitz Collection (1897-1981), brought to Israel in 1949 and kept in the family ever since.


The rare peacock types from Tabrīz form a varied and only partially documented group within Iranian civic copper coinage. The present variety is distinguished by the pronounced stylized crest of the bird, differing from more commonly encountered forms.
