Mongols. Golden Horde. Toqta, AH 690-713 / AD 1291-1313. Dirham (Silver, 18 mm, 1.44 g, 3 h), Lion-to-left type, Saqchi (Isaccea in Romania), no date. Within a circle, in three lines: khān / al-ʿādil / Tūqtā (‘The just Khan Toqtā’ in Arabic). Rev. In three lines: al-minnat-u li-llāh / ḍarb-i / Sāqchī (‘Gratefulness belongs to God. Struck in Sāqchī’ in Arabic); Tamgha in center; lion to left with star or sun symbol above the back. Album J2063. Extremely rare, fresh and attractive. Small areas of weakness, otherwise, extremely fine.


Well-preserved examples of the lion types are extremely rare, especially with clear legends and visible figural details, as most surviving specimens are weakly struck or heavily worn.
