MACEDON. Mende. Circa 460-423 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29 mm, 17.18 g, 2 h). Dionysos, bearded and holding kantharos in his right hand, reclining left on the back of a donkey walking to right, holding ivy wreath in its mouth; to right, bird perched right on bush. Rev. MEN-ΔA-IO-N around vine with five bunches of grapes within linear square; all within shallow incuse square. HGC 3.1, 545. Noe, Mende, Group II, 27 (same dies, and this coin cited). SNG ANS 327 (same dies, but with an incorrect citation of Noe). SNG Copenhagen 209. A very rare variety, the only known reverse die with the ethnic starting at the bottom right. Attractively toned and with a fine pedigree. Slightly granular and with a few minor marks, otherwise, good very fine.
