Lot 707
GERMANY. Kaiserreich. Württemberg. Wilhelm II, 1891-1918. Pattern 2 Mark dually dated 1913 and 1914 (Bronze, 28 mm, 9.22 g, 12 h), probably Stuttgart. DEUTSCHES REICH 1913 / ✱ZWEI MARK✱ Imperial eagle. Rev. DEUTSCHES REICH 1914 / ✱ZWEI MARK✱ Imperial eagle. Beckenbauer -. Schaaf -, cf. 2 M. G6. Extremely rare. Tiny marks and deposits, otherwise, good extremely fine.

The precise background of these enigmatic and extremely rare trial pieces remains unclear. Schaaf was familiar with examples struck in aluminum, copper-nickel, nickel, and silvered bronze (Schaaf 2 M. G6). The specimens known to him were recovered from the fire debris of the bombed Stuttgart Mint, suggesting that this piece, too, was struck in Stuttgart. Neither Schaaf nor Beckenbauer was aware of any such trial in bronze.
