A beautifully toned Didrachm from Gela

SICILY. Gela. Circa 490/85-480/75 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 21 mm, 8.65 g, 4 h). Bearded warrior, nude but for high helmet, riding horse to right, brandishing spear in his right hand and holding reins in his left. Rev. AΛ-ƎϽ Forepart of the river-god Gelas, in the form of a man-headed bull, to right; all within shallow circular incuse. Boston MFA 241 (same dies). HGC 2, 363. Jenkins, Gela, Group I, 28 (O9/R11). SNG Ashmolean 1719-20 (same dies). A very well centered and attractively toned example. Some deposits on the obverse and with traces of overstriking on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.
