Extremely rare and nicely toned
Lot 696
GERMANY. Ulm (Königliche Münzstätte). Friedrich I, 1152-1190. Bracteate (Silver, 19 mm, 0.42 g, 12 h), circa 1170-1180. Crowned head to left on wall between two towers; above, two ringlets; below, facing angel; in outer margin, border formed of И-shaped ornaments. Rev. Incuse ob obverse. Cahn -. Häberle -. Heinz 20. Klein/Ulmer (CC) -. Ulmer -. Wüthrich -. Extremely rare and nicely toned. Weakly struck and small marks, otherwise, very fine.

This exceptional type was previously unknown to scholarship and is therefore absent from most major bracteate collections. M. Heinz was able to attribute the type conclusively to Ulm on the basis of hoard analyses and style (cf. M. Heinz: Der Münzfund von 1180, Stuttgart 2019, pp. 80f.).
