SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 16.87 g, 3 h), circa 480-475. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣYRΑΚΟΣ-ΙΟ-Ν Diademed head of Arethousa to right, her hair falling down the back of her neck and wearing pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 122 (V55/R83). HGC 2, 1306. Randazzo 274-5 (same dies). SNG ANS (same dies). Attractively toned and with a head of Arethousa of lovely style. Light porosity and the obverse somewhat weak, otherwise, good very fine.
