INDIA, Islamic Sultanates. Bengal. Daʾud Shah Kararani, AH 980-984 / AD 1572-1576. Rupee (Silver, 31 mm, 11.48 g, 6 h), Tanda, AH 980 = AD 1572/3. Within a square, ‘lā ilāha illā Allāh / Muḥammad rasūl Allāh’ (‘There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’ in Arabic); traces of the names of the four Rashidun Caliphs in Arabic in the four surrounding panels. Rev. Citing his father Sulayman Shah (AH 972-980 / AD 1565-1572) within a square, ‘Dāwūd Shāh Sulaymān / Shāh Kararānī / khallada Allāh mulkahū / wa sulṭānahū’ (‘Daʾud Shah, [son of] Sulayman Shah, Kararani. May Allah perpetuate his kingdom and sovereignty’ in Arabic); in the margin, the kunya ‘Abuʾl-Muẓaffar’ (in Arabic), and the mint and date formula, mostly off flan. Goron/Goenka B982. Beautifully toned and sharply struck. Good extremely fine.
