This bilingual dirham belongs to a small and historically important Ghaznavid series combining Arabic Islamic formulae with Sanskrit inscriptions in Śāradā script. Maḥmūd’s authority in the Indian frontier regions was commemorated by renaming of Lahore as Maḥmūdpūr.
