Umayyad Caliphate. al-Qatari ibn al-Fuja'a, Kharijite rebel, AH 69-79 / AD 688-698. Drachm (Silver, 30 mm, 3.79 g, 3 h), Arab-Sasanian type, DA (Darabgird), AH 75 = AD 694/5. Draped bust resembling Khosrau II to right, wearing an elaborate mural crown with two wings; behind head, ‘GDE / ʾp̄zwt'’ (‘[may his] glory increase’ in Pahlavi); before head, ‘ktlʾ ʾmyl Y wlwyšnykʾn’ = ‘Katrā amīr ī wurrōyišnīgān’ (‘Qatari, Commander of the Believers’ in Pahlavi); in the outer margin, ‘lā ḥukm illā li-llāh’ (‘No judgement except Allah’s’ in Arabic). Rev. Fire altar with ribbons, flanked by two attendants; above altar, star and crescent; to left, date in Pahlavi; to right, DA (abbreviation for the name of the mint in Pahlavi). Album 33. Rare and nicely toned. Minor corrosion and tiny scratches, otherwise, very fine.


Al-Qatari ibn al-Fuja'a was a poet and leader of the Azraqi Kharijites in their rebellion against the Umayyad Caliphate.
