An apparently unpublished and very unusual obol
Lot 794
UNCERTAIN LEVANTINE REGION, circa 2nd-1st century BC. Obol (Silver, 8 mm, 0.50 g, 3 h). Female head to right, wearing mural (?) crown and pendant earring. Rev. Zeus seated left, holding Nike in his right hand and long scepter with his left; in field to left, ΔI. Apparently unpublished. Somewhat rough, otherwise, very fine.

We are not aware of any comparanda for this highly unusual coin. On the obverse, a female portrait wearing a crown - perhaps a mural crown - is paired with the familiar Macedonian Zeus Nikephoros as a reverse type known from Hellenistic royal coinage. Unfortunately, the legend ΔI offers no clarification. In style and fabric the coin appears Levantine, but it remains an enigma.
