LUCANIA. Velia. Circa 300-280 BC. Didrachm or Nomos (Silver, 21 mm, 7.41 g, 3 h), signed by Philistion. Head of Athena to right, wearing Corinthian helmet decorated with Nike driving quadriga to right on the bowl; on crest holder, ΦΙΛΙΣΤΙΩΝΟΣ. Rev. ΥEΛHTΩN Lion standing left, head facing, holding javelin in its jaws; above, Nike flying left, crowning the lion with a wreath, and ΦΙ; below, three waves. BMC 88. HN Italy 1303. Williams 407 (O201.2/R288). SNG ANS 1358 (same dies). SNG Ashmolean 1314 (same dies). Very rare. Nicely toned and of excellent style. The obverse struck from a slightly worn die with a thin die break and with light scratches on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.
