Magnentius, 350-353. 'Maiorina' (Bronze, 22 mm, 5.00 g, 12 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Lugdunum, irregular mint, after 351. D N MACNIN-[ ... ] Bare-headed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Magnentius to right; behind, A. Rev. VICTORIAE DD NN AVG ET CAES / RPLG (all retrograde) Two Victories holding shield, set on column and inscribed VOT / V / MVLT / X (all retrograde) in four lines. Cf. Bastien pl. XVIII, 43-53. Minor traces of corrosion and with light doubling on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.


This beautiful imitation combines an attractive imitative style with a charming double strike that frames the emperor’s face with a second outline, as if he were wearing a theatrical mask.
