A highly interesting contemporary cast imitation
Lot 2454
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 19 mm, 3.73 g, 6 h), a contemporary cast imitation. Imitating Siscia, after 319-320. IMP CONSTAN-TINVS AVG Helmeted, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to left, holding spear over right shoulder in his right hand, and shield with horseman on his left arm. Rev. VICTORIA LAETAE PRINC PERP / BSIS• Two victories holding shield inscribed VOT/PR over altar. Cf. RIC 101 (for prototype). Porous, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Ronald Wörle (1930-2025) and privately acquired from Münzen und Medaillen GmbH (with original ticket).

This fascinating piece is a contemporary cast imitation. Counterfeiter’s moulds for such issues are well attested, yet the cast pieces themselves are strikingly rare - perhaps because they were systematically removed by the authorities.
