L. Torquatus, 58 BC. Denarius (Subaeratus, 19 mm, 2.59 g, 6 h), a contemporary plated imitation. Irregular mint, after 58 BC. Head of Sibyl to right, wearing ivy wreath; below, SIBYLLA. Rev. L•TORQVAT - III•VIR Tripod surmounted by an amphora between two stars; all within torque. Cf. Babelon (Pomponia) 12, Crawford 411/1b, RBW 1490 and Sydenham 835a (for prototype). Beautifully toned, and very unusual as a plated imitation. Breaks in plating, otherwise, good very fine.
