D. Silanus L.f, 91 BC. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.25 g, 7 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue. Irregular mint. Laureate head of Apollo to right; below neck truncation, thunderbolt. Rev. D•SILANVS•L•F / ROMA Victory in biga to right, holding reins in both hands; above, XIIII. Cf. Babelon (anonyme) 226, Crawford 350A/2, RBW 1333 and Sydenham 723 (for obverse), and Babelon (Junia) 15, Crawford 337/3, RBW 1233 and Sydenham 646 (for reverse). Minor breaks in plating and some scratches, otherwise, very fine.


This imitation combines the obverse of an anonymous denarius dating to 86 BC (Crawford 350A/2) with a reverse of D. Silanus L.f. (Crawford 337/3) from 91 BC.
