ISLANDS OFF THRACE, Thasos. Circa 148-90/80 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 31 mm, 15.00 g, 12 h), a contemporary plated imitation. Head of Dionysos to right, wearing ivy wreath and taenia. Rev. HΛΡΛEOΥΣ - ΣΩTHΡOΣ / ΘΛΣIΩN Herakles standing front, head to left, holding club in his right hand and with lion's skin draped over his left arm; in inner left field, Μ. Cf. HGC 6, 359 (for prototype). An interesting imitation of fine style with nearly fully intact plating. Very small breaks in plating and with a test cut on the reverse, otherwise, about very fine.


The plating on this attractive imitation is nearly intact; the bronze core is revealed only by an ancient test cut between Herakles’ legs.
