Struck from two obverse dies
Lot 2250
CENTRAL GAUL. Sequani. 1st century BC. Quinarius (Silver, 15 mm, 2.00 g). Q•DO[CI] Celticized head of Roma to left. Rev. [Q•DOCI] / S AM F Horse springing left. DT 3245. LT 5405. A highly interesting piece struck from two obverse dies. Minor areas of weakness, otherwise, good very fine.

On some coins of this series, traces of a second obverse die are visible at the rim (cf., e.g., Sonntag 38 (2022), 1004). This may indicate that multiple dies were used in striking, allowing several pieces to be produced simultaneously. On the present coin the flan slipped so far that both impressions are clearly discernible - a simple off-center strike, yet one that affords unusually clear insight into this remarkable technique.
