MACEDON. Mende. Circa 460-423 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 28 mm, 16.68 g, 8 h). Dionysos, bearded and holding kantharos in his right hand, reclining left on the back of a donkey walking to right; to right, bird perched right on bush with two flowers. Rev. MEN-ΔA-I-ON around vine with five bunches of grapes within linear square; all within shallow incuse square. HGC 3.1, 545. Dewing 1039 (same dies). Noe, Mende -, cf. 33 and 34 (same reverse die). Pozzi 786 (this coin). SNG ANS 325-6. Nicely toned and with an illustrious pedigree. Slightly granular and with minor traces of corrosion, otherwise, very fine.
